Our Champion Daniel Gospic, of the International Apneapassion Team, has tested for a few months the 2024 Best Choice by Apneapasson winner in the pneumatic spearguns category, the Mares Force. In particular, Daniel has tested the 100 cm. The Croatian market is one where pneumatic spearguns a extremely diffused, and Daniel is even more the perfect tester.
Mares Force at a first look
Daniel Gospic: “The Mares Force 100 cm, winner of the Best Choice by Apneapassion, at first sight is already impeccable. All details are made with a great design. The grip is anatomical, but not too much as you would do if you practiced only the aspetto technique. I love, in fact, to hold the speargun, when diving, backwards. With an extremely anatomical shape such position would be more difficult. The line of aim is really perfect, as the barrel is offset internally, so the shaft is moved upward. Additionally, the fiber optic sight on the muzzle is great.
The shaft is a very good quality single barb solution, which I normally prefer for speed and best penetration of the fish. Of course some might prefer a two barbs shaft for best retention of the fish.”
Loading the Force
Daniel Gospic: “As I am tall, I have no difficulty in loading long spearguns, so it was easy for me to load the Mares Force 100. You just need a little bit of practice to load the speargun all in one go, as if the shaft returns slightly up the sealing of the muzzle might be lost and then it is better to start over again. This is something that happens with all Vuoto System pneumatic spearguns.”
The shot and the trigger
Daniel Gospic: “The shot of the Mares Force is extremely precise, rapid and immediate. You do not feel the difference compared to a sling speargun for what regards the immediateness of the shot, normally higher with elastic bands compared to compressed air.
The trigger is extremely soft and sensitive, a great result with the traditional helical spring (chosen by Mares for best reliability – editor’s note). An upgrade, which is very common nowadays with tuners of pneumatic spearguns, is the use of the Torsion spring, which could make the trigger even more progressive and smooth.
The line release lever is very well made, and does not interfere with the shot. Definitely, this speargun deserves the 2024 Best Choice by Apneapassion prize“
Possible improvements
Daniel Gospic: “The reel is well designed and easy to use and adjust, a very high-quality solution. Thinking of greater lengths of the Mares Force, a future 120 cm for example, great for spearfishing big fish like great amberjacks and tunas in the blue, a bigger and even stronger reel would be more adequate.“
