After presenting what is probably the highest quality and value speargun on the market in our X-Rays column, the Uragano 115 Ocean by Cetma Composites, what better test than trying it in Gran Canaria hunting Wahoos. Our athlete Nuhazer Moreno Castillo was impressed!

First impressions

“When I received the Cetma Uragano 115 Ocean, I immediately saw it is a real jewel, and the design and materials hit the sight for the absolute perceived quality. The Ocean version is amazing with its power system. The Vela propulsion with 8.5 mm shaft, and 4 pairs of elastic bands, the main one of 19.5 mm and the other three of 16.5 mm, make the Ocean a real “cannon”. I suggest evaluating the optional 8.5 mm shaft with double barb, as the one I received had a single barb.”

Loading the Uragano Ocean

Loading the Uragano 115 Ocean is simple and quite fast, considering the propulsion system and the number of rubber bands. I simply needed to understand the positioning of the 4 pairs of bands, as the connections in front of the reel are 3, so for the Ocean version, two pairs of bands connect to the same element. Once understood that, everything is amazingly simple following the right procedure and with a little bit of technique . The only care to be taken is to keep the shaft well pressed to the barrel when inserting it in the release mechanism, so that it slides perfectly in, without hitting the upper part of the steel box.

Perfect balance in the water

Once, loaded, I understood immediately how the engineering design together with the craftsmanship of the highest quality give the Uragano a balance which is absolutely perfect. Such a big speargun in the water feels perfectly balanced and light. Even considering the structure of the Uragano Ocean and the great number of elastic bands, the lateral swing is extremely good, thanks to the elements like the reel and the elastic bands being designed and positioned to reduce to the minimum the lateral section. The vertical swing is a little bit more limited, evidently, but this is inevitable for such a strong structure as the one of the Uragano.

Grip and trigger

The “rubber” coating on the handle is a huge help to feel the grip and to have the perfect adherence, so the speargun is held tightly and safely at all times. For such a speargun this solution is perfect, as you need to have the maximum grip at all times. Of course for different uses, which are not the ones intended for the Uragano, like spearfishing in the dens among rocks, a grip with less adherence would feel better as you need to adjust the hand on the handle a little more.

For my hand of average dimension, the position of the trigger is exactly where I want it to be. Also, the feeling of perfect fit of the hand on the handle and under the chest loading butt gives great confidence when aiming for the shot.

The shot

Line of aim

Finally, I managed to try the Uragano Ocean on some Wahoos and the result was real magic. I have never tried a speargun able to do what the Uragano has shown me. With its perfect balance, good swing and perfect fit of my hand to the handle, the aiming phase becomes extremely easy. Also, the line of aim is so “clean” and with the possibility to perfectly see the shaft all along its length. In such a way, the aiming phase is greatly facilitated.

Release mechanism

When shooting the Ermes release mechanism shows all its quality, with a smoothness of the shot that reaches the top possible level. You can control the release of the shaft perfectly, with immediateness, but also no risk of accidental release.

Zero recoil

Evidently, the Vela system puts together great power with reduced recoil. Additionally, the Cetma Uragano Ocean has such a perfect design, with its amazing balance in the water and calculation of the forces acting on the speargun during the shot, that, as also indicated in the simpler propulsion system speargun, the Arrow, any recoil present acts exactly along the longitudinal axis of the Uragano, so there is no vertical movement of the muzzle at any point, so the precision of the shot is millimetric.

Nuhazer Moreno of the Apnea Passion Team catches a 20Kg Wahoo in Gran Canaria with an 8 m shot using the Cetma Uragano 115 Ocean

Finally, the shot and its power have confirmed, if not exceeded, my expectations. I shot a 20 Kg Wahoo at 8 meters and the shaft has passed the fish giving me a great catch. When I shot, I really just tried what I thought could not be a successful hit, as the Wahoo appeared to be too far and had no intention to come closer. So, just to try the Uragano Ocean, I shot. Unbeatable power, great precision and almost zero recoil have permitted me to catch a great Wahoo. I would never been able to do the same with any of the spearguns tried so far. Now, it would be hard to leave the Uragano Ocean and spearfish with any other speargun.

Conclusions

What an amazing speargun the Cetma Uragano Ocean is! Unbeatable power, great aiming, perfect balance and top level quality of materials and design. This speargun really reaches the peak of the best offer on the market. The price, definitely high, is though perfectly justified by the quality and performance of the Uragano Ocean. If you really want a jewel which will make a great difference shooting big fish in the blue water and aspetto techniques, the Uragano Ocean is the choice, if you can afford it of course!
