Our athlete Davide Tummolillo, Mr Smile, has tested for a few months the Lobster Squid neck weight. Beautifully designed and with a good effective use, the Lobster Squid has the best weight range on the market, but some adaptability issues and a high cost.

Review by Davide Tummolillo

The most versatile in terms of weight range

“I’ve been using the Lobster Squid Weight neck weight for about four months. Beyond its sleek and attractive design, it has proven to be truly practical and versatile, with some need for initial adaptation though.

The modular 50gr weights can be swapped with 80gr ones, increasing the total weight by about 300gr. The slots on the base structure, which weighs 800 grams, are in fact 10. This means that with the 50gr inserts the weight reaches 1.3 Kg, while with the 80gr inserts it goes up to maximum 1.6 Kg. Finally, utilizing the new 800gr single insert, we can reach the weight of 2.204 kg. In such a way, the Lobster Squid is the most versatile neck weight, in terms of weight range, on the market. This feature makes it adaptable to many different training sessions and diving styles.”

The 800gr rear insert gives additional weight but stiffens the collar and makes it more difficult to adjust it to the neck

Some time needed to adapt

“The Lobster Squid in the basic setup with 50g or 80g inserts has needed a little time to find a good adaptation to my neck, but after that is was great. It becomes a bit less practical when adding the 800 g back weight, which is a bigger and wider element compared to the standard round ones. This element connects to two rear holes on the neck weight base, at the rear. Such additional structure stiffens the back of the Squid and the collar is harder to adjust around the neck. I had to test several settings to find the right fit, otherwise it tends to shift slightly during head-down descents.”

Nice details

“The magnetic closing cord is very comfortable, making use quick and safe, and helps in any situation in which, for whatever reason, the Squid loses position on the neck. The soft touch rubber cover of the Lobster Squid is extremely nice, and the colour range, 7 different options, is really attractive“.

Overall, Lobster has once again delivered an excellent freediving product, carefully designed and definitely functional.”

Conclusions by Apnea Passion

The Lobster Squid neck weight, thought for CWT dives, is probably the most well finished and attractive solution on the market. Certainly, the weight range, from 800gr to 2.040Kg, is the greatest you can find. Still, the new 800gr additional insert, which permits to go higher in total weight compared to all the competition offering weight adjustable solutions, is not easy to use and needs some optimization. The colour range is unbeatable and adds attractivity to the Squid. All this, though, has to be payed quite a lot, with the price going from 199€ of the 1.3 Kg solution, to 279€ for the 2.2 Kg. Definitely high compared to a good offer by some competitors, such as 2971 Series 2, going from 900gr to 1.5 Kg, at only 79£, and the C4 Carbon D&D, with weight range on the collar (it has also the “tail” for Dyn) from 910gr to 1630gr, at 129€. Of course, we will publish the test of these two neck weights soon for a more complete comparison.
