Looking at the spearfishing market, some pretty interesting products are the quick release weights and harpoons which can be mounted on the shafts. Picasso and Sigalsub are definitely two companies offering interesting solutions for both. Let’s see them in this very special dossier.
Quick release weights
Picasso
When it comes to quick release weights, Picasso’s offer is amazing. In fact, the Portuguese company has an interesting quick release 1 Kg weight, which can be connected to the weight belt through a Nylon covered elastic band.
Quick release anchor weights
Additionally, there is a complete range of release weights that have also the function of anchor for the buoy. They have a cylindrical body filled with lead. Dimensions of the body are 9 cm long and 3 cm of diameter for the 0.5 kg solution.
Classic
The simplest version is a 0.5 or 0.75 Kg cylindrical lead weight with a steel ring at one end and a double steel wire on the side to connect it to the belt. The steel ring is perfect to connect the line of the buoy. The release system of the weight from the belt is easy and practical.
With claws
Probably it is the rest of the options of this special range of quick release anchor weights which is even more interesting. One option is complete of two more steel rigid wires which work as an additional grasping system of the anchor to the sea floor. This option is available only in the 0.5 Kg version.
With shaft extractor
Of the same type is the quick release anchor weight with shaft extractor, a very interesting and useful solution. It can actually work better than the shaft extractor system present on knives, as the cylindrical Picasso weight can be grabbed and held better than the knife during the action on the blocked shaft.
Professional float anchor
Finally, beautiful is the 0.5 Kg professional float anchor, which has four flukes which can be opened up to obtain a fully functional folding umbrella anchor.
Sigalsub
The offer by the Italian company is more classic, but still it shows how Sigalsub is today able to offer a very complete line of products, including quick release weights.
500 grams quick release weight
The traditional quick release weight by Sigalsub is a known shape, with a semi-circular part and a longer thinner part which is inserted between the belt and the body. The weight is 500 grams and covered with a white colour rubber, which is very visible when on the sea floor. The design of this Sigalsub quick release weight is easy to grab and handle with the hands. The weight is complete with a stainless steel ring.
300 grams bone shape weight
Sigalsub 300 grams bone shape weight is also well known. As the 500 grams solutions, it is covered with a white rubber. The shape permits to easily position it under the belt, where it will be in a good still position, until it is released by the spearfisherman. The weight is complete with a stainless steel ring.
Harpoons
Also in the harpoons sector, both Picasso and Sigalsub have a very good offer.
Sigalsub
Since its birth, Sigalsub has had an incredible high quality shaft offer, but also harpoon tips for threaded shafts. Let’s see the harpoon tips we have received.
Double barb harpoons
The Sigalsub has a complete double barb harpoons offer, of various lengths, diameters, and barb length. The Mini harpoon is 6.9 cm long, has a 6 mm diameter and 2.5 cm long barbs. Of the same diameter and length of barbs, but necessarily longer, is the two alternating barbs solution, the total length of the harpoon being 9.3 cm.
Moving to bigger diameters and length of barbs, we have the 9 mm diameter double barb solution. The barbs are 34 mm long and the harpoon has a total length of 76 mm.
A slightly longer harpoon of 1 mm diameter is the next step. It has double barbs of 53 mm of length and a special squared section of the tip for better cutting penetration.
Another type of harpoon is made with double barbs made of burnished steel. It has a total length of 79 mm and a diameter of 7 mm. What is special are the long barbs of 53 mm and the long and thin cone of the tip. The latter has definitely an amazing penetration, but of course is weaker against the rocks, with a much higher risk of bending.
The longest harpoon received by Sigalsub it total 15.1 cm. The two barbs are made with burnished steel and are 73 mm long. The diameter is 1 cm. The same harpoon is also available with single barb.
Picasso
Single barb harpoons
Picasso has sent us a couple of harpoons. One is the shorter version single barb. It is 92 mm long, with an 8 mm diameter. The barb is 40 mm long.
The longer harpoon is 17.5 cm long with a single barb of 65 mm. The latter has a central longitudinal reinforcement.
Paralyzer
A very interesting special tip for threaded shafts is the Picasso paralyzer. It has 5 tips positioned on a thick and resistant aluminium base. The tips are 12 cm long. The total weight of the paralyzer is 55 grams.
Slip tip
The slip tip is especially designed for oceanic spearfishing in blu water to hunt big pelagic fish. It is a dismountable harpoon that avoids the risk of the fish tearing away of the shaft or even breaking it.
Picasso
Picasso has its own slip tip. It has a diameter equal to 9 mm. The tip has an extremely long and thin cone for best penetration of the fish. The positioning of the base in the harpoon is helped by two “tongues”. The connection between the harpoon and the steel ring positioned on the shaft is ensured by a thick and resistant Nylon line. Close to the harpoon the line is thicker as it is more stressed. After the first 11 cm the wire reduces its diameter.
Sigalsub
Sigalsub has its new offer of a burnished stainless steel solution. It has a tricuspid tip. The total length is 100 mm while the diameter is 7 mm. The insertion of the base in the harpoon is helped by a lateral steel “tongue”. The connection of the steel ring positioned on the shaft with the tip of the harpoon is guaranteed by a Nylon line.
