The new Pescador Sub Roller speargun is an additional offer by the Portuguese company, which has really an incredbile number of spearguns and accessories. We have seen, for example, the beautiful Pescador Carbon Power speargun, and recently also the full range of shaft extractors and straighteners. Let’s take a look at the new Pescador Roller this time.
Pescador handle and release mechanism
We like the handle and release mechanism by Pescador Sub. The handle has a nice design. It is slightly anatomical but symmetrical, which means it can be used by left and right ahnders, and also it is very flexible to be used in dynamic techniques like agguato and aspetto. The sides of the grip have dotted cheeks as anti-slip solution, and can change colour adapting to the main look of the speargun. Our Pescador Roller is, for example all red: handle, barrel and reel. Nice.
The release mechanism is an inverted 100% stainless steel solution. The structure is light to avoid additional weight. The lateral line release lever is also in steel, just like the trigger, and is quite thin, also keeping weight down, but the design is well made to keep the line in place. The lever can be easily moved from left to right using a traditional Phillips screwdriver.
The “tail” of the release mechanism extends to the gun butt, which is then connected to a wide and functional plastic element covered with anti-slip rubber. The upper profile of the gun butt has a V shape to open to a clean line of aim.The distance between the index finger and the shaft lower profile is 7 mm.
The lower part of the grip has a hole for the passage of a connection line or a bunjee for blue water hunting. The safety system of the release mechanism is obtained with a sliding button just behind the trigger. The button coming out when the system is locked could be a little bit more perceivable with the right hand.
In front of the handle, on the initial part of the barrel, a plastic element creates two side wings for the positioning of the monofilament away from the line of aim.
Barrel
The barrel of the Pescador Sub Roller speargun is a 28 mm diameter made of a special alluminium alloy and has and integrated shaft guide, which helps precision and additionally stiffens the structure. The thickness of the tube walls is 1 mm.
The lengths available of the barrel are 75, 82, 90, 100, 110 and 120 cm, where the nominal length indicated on the speargun is exactly the one of the barrel.
What si nice about the barrels of the Pescador Sub Roller speargun, is that they are available, matching the colour of the reel and the one of the lateral “cheeks” of the grip, in various colours: red, gold, gree, blu, black and purple.
Roller system
The Roller muzzle is evidently the key characteristic of this speargun. The design is quite important in dimensions, with laser cut steel parts, while two axles are in aluminium to reduce weight. The extensions of the steel parts are generously designed so the passage and positioning of the line is easy and secure. The inferior part of the muccle is complete with a resistant and long lasting stainless steel loop for the passage of the line. We have weighed the muzzle and the value is 145 grams.
The muzzle is connected to the barrel trough a traditional male to female system. The lock is obtained by a small cross-head screw. The water seal is obtained with a single O-Ring.
The elastic bands of the Roller system are connected in front of the reel to a long steel hook. Probably a shorter one would be lighter and generate more useful lenght for the rubbers.
Elastic bands and wishbone
The elastic bands, just like on all Pescador Sub spearguns, are the top quality Primeline. On the Pescador Sub Roller they are 16 mm diameter, a strong setup for high power. The wishbine is in Dyneema nicely covered with a strong plastic tube that protects the system giving it a much longer life. On top of the wishbone a pulling system for the loading is also present, and well designed with also a plastic tube which makes it more comfortable to pull hard during the loading.
Reel
The reel is the Pescador Sub R30 Long Arm, in plastic, simple and light. The structure is resistant and functional, with also an long arm lever which helps the easy and fast winding of the line. The knob for the adjustment of the clutch is very compact with a triangular section. A bigger and more easy to grip knob could improve the system. The total height of the reel from the base of the barrel is 9.5 cm, ok, but a little too much for spearfishing sliding on the sea bed. Other options of reels are available, from 20 to 50 meters of line, and also in steel and horizontal solutions.
Shaft
The shafts mounted on the Pescador Sub Roller speargun are 7 and 8 mm diameter, with laser welded shark fins, single upper barb and tricuspid tip, made by Pescador.
