Introduction

We have already presented the 2971 Series 2 neckweight, highlighting its build quality and adjustable system. With the introduction of the new Tail, the British company further evolves the concept, creating a fully modular ballast solution particularly suited for dynamic apnea. The result is a system that significantly increases flexibility and customization while maintaining simplicity of use.
Materials

The 2971 Tail is made of technopolymer components produced using high-end 3D printing technologies, with all parts designed and manufactured in-house. This approach confirms the strong engineering identity of the brand. The outer structure is made of TPU, thermoplastic polyurethane, with 95A Shore hardness, a material selected for its excellent balance between elasticity and durability. TPU combines flexibility with high mechanical resistance and is particularly effective in water applications, offering strong resistance to abrasion, freshwater and saltwater while maintaining its shape and performance over time. Its shock-absorbing properties and long-term durability make it ideal for components subjected to repeated stress in both pool and marine environments. The internal ballast is enclosed in a removable cover fixed with Torx screws.
Modular ballast system

The most interesting aspect of the 2971 Tail is its modular design. The system is available in two standard configurations, 1.2 kg with three segments and 1.7 kg with four segments. When combined with the Series 2 neckweight, which ranges from 900 grams (but can go even lower) up to 1500 grams, the total ballast can reach 2.7 kg or 3.2 kg. Each segment has a precise weight distribution, with a main element of 525 grams, a central segment of 425 grams and an end element of 250 grams. The system can be further expanded by purchasing additional 425 gram segments, allowing virtually unlimited customization of the total ballast. Indicative pricing places the 1.2 kg version at around 60 euros, the 1.7 kg version at approximately 69 euros, and each additional 425 grams segment at around 9 euros. The system is available in both black and white.

Fast adjustment system

One of the most distinctive features of the 2971 Tail is its extremely fast adjustment system. Unlike traditional solutions, no tools are required, and there are no screws, pins or clips involved. The connection between segments is achieved through a mechanical press-fit system where plastic slots on one side match steel pins on the other. By simply applying pressure, the elements lock together securely. The result is a connection that is both very fast to assemble and extremely stable, with no risk of accidental disconnection. It is the most efficient system currently available on the market for freediving ballast.
Connection to the Series 2 neckweight

The integration between the Tail and the Series 2 neckweight is equally well designed. The Tail features a looped hinge system that slides directly onto the neckweight. This hinge is made of TPU and reinforced with 316 stainless steel pins, ensuring high strength. The connection is immediate, secure and highly reliable, with no risk of detachment even during intensive use.
Final considerations

The 2971 Series 2 neckweight with the Tail represents a significant step forward in modular ballast systems for freediving. The combination of advanced materials, intelligent engineering and extreme ease of use makes it a highly effective solution for athletes looking for precision, adaptability and reliability. It is particularly well suited for dynamic apnea, where fine tuning of ballast can make a real difference in performance. We will soon test the complete system and publish our true results.
