The great spearfishing champion, David Fernández Montero, after Mares, goes to Picasso. We asked him some questions about his new adventure and his plans for 2025.

Carlo Forni: Hi David, you spent some time as a Mares athlete, a very important company that has made history in spearfishing. Would you like to send them a comment?
David Fernández Montero: The truth is that I am very grateful to them because, after making the decision to leave my previous team, they were the first to be interested in me. That a brand like Mares wants to have me in their ranks is always a source of pride, but the circumstances of life have meant that right now our paths have separated. Who knows what the future holds for us!

CF: Today you are a Picasso athlete, a company with a huge product offer, 100% focused on spearfishing. Which are the products that have caught your attention and that you like the most?
DFM: Waiting to try more products, perhaps what really catches my attention and inspires me in this new sporting stage of my life is the customization and the wide variety of items, all designed for spearfishing. After all, that’s what I like the most and one of my great passions.
Being in a brand that allows you tocreate tailor-made parallel rubbers, as well as being able to choose the length of the shafts, is something that is available to very few. Carlos Osório is a great spearo, he understands perfectly the needs of all spearfishermen.
In general, I am pleasantly surprised, but to comment on something in particular, the Magnum Carbon Rail speargun with closed muzzle has been my great discovery; it only took me one shot for it to become my first speargun.

Carlo Forni: If you had to give us some advice on Picasso products, while waiting to test them calmly, which ones would you recommend for spearfishing in the Summer period and which ones for spearfishing among rocks and in the foam in Winter?
David Fernández Montero: I am currently using the Venus Pro rechargeable torch with its neoprene cover, and it’s brutal. I love it because I don’t usually carry the flashlight to avoid bumps during my action, but the Venus Pro is extremely comfortable, cancelling out any noise thanks to its cover. This way, I don’t lose the possibility of checking a fish in case I’m surprised by a n obstacle while I’m moving along the bottom.
The speargun, as I mentioned before, is the Magnum Carbon Rail in its different sizes, being the 85cm the one I use the most because of its versatility.

CF: You are an extraordinary athlete and have successfully competed in many competitions. Do you have plans to compete in 2025? If so, in which competitions?
DFM: Competition is part of my life and it is thanks to it that I have managed to evolve as an spearo. It forces you to always try a little harder, and it’s a great teacher, because it helps you both as a sportsman and as a person.
Nowadays my professional circumstances have changed and that means that being able to attend competitions is not an easy task. However, I will continue until I stop feeling that urge and, as I am still young, I do not rule out anything at all. I will face 2025 with great enthusiasm and we will see how everything evolves, without generating expectations… just flowing!

Carlo Forni: Thank you very much, as always, for your kindness. We let you send a greeting to all the readers of Apnea Passion and a comment on our magazine.
David Fernandez Montero: The feeling is mutual! It is a great pleasure and a privilege to be part of this little piece of the history of our sport. We owe all this to people like you, who are dedicated to spreading our sport, as well as all the followers and readers of Apnea Passion who share and interact with your publications.
We can never thank you enough for the work you do and, although it does not help much, I give you my sincere congratulations for the great work you are doing and for the one that, for sure, you still have to do!
