If you are a football fan, you know Flamengo, the biggest club in Brazil and arguably in the world! With millions of passionate fans across the planet, the Brazilian club packs every stadium where its legendary football team plays. What many don’t know is that Flamengo also has winning teams and athletes in many other disciplines like Volleyball, Judo, Gymnastics, Water polo, and so on. In the last Olympic games held in Tokyo, Flamengo athletes won two gold medals and one silver. Flamengo, alongside Barcelona and Real Madrid, is one of the only clubs in the world to be world champions in both basketball and football.

This brief overview of Clube de Regatas Flamengo’s commitment to the sport is to show that its winning history goes way beyond football, as it announces Flamengo’s new sport discipline: Spearfishing! Yes, now Clube de Regatas Flamengo has an official spearfishing team with which it intends to win many titles, including the CMAS Spearfishing World Cup to be held next March in Flamengo’s hometown of Rio de Janeiro. To fulfill this ambitious plan, Flamengo has selected three of Brazil’s top athletes to join its squad, creating a spearfishing team that balances youth, talent, and experience. The competitive spearfishermen that will represent the Black & Red team from Rio in the next Spearfishing World Cup are Kevin Sansão (XT Diving PRO), Raphael Ambrosio (Cressi), and Francisco Loffredi (Cressi).

Good start

Their debut in spearfishing competitions happened last November at the traditional Bruno Hermanny Tournament, held yearly at the Rio de Janeiro Yacht Club, in memory of the great spearfishing champion Bruno Hermanny. Flamengo’s spearfishing team could not have had a better start, as they won two awards at the competition: first place and the biggest fish, a King Mackerel shot by Raphael Ambrosio.

The presence of Clube Flamengo’s president, Rodolfo Landim, at the weighing, shows how seriously Flamengo is taking its new discipline! Was Flamengo Spearfishing’s victorious start beginner’s luck or a presage of many triumphs still to come? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: no spearfishing team has more fans supporting it than Flamengo.
