The Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT with power regulator is the top of the line penumatic speargun by Mares, today part of Head Group, and is complete with all possible advanced technical solutions, except the Vuoto muzzle, which evidently can be added in a second stage. Let’s go deep in the analysis of these great solutions, by Mares, surely offering intereting and refined solution in such kind of spearguns, as anticipated with the Cyrano 1.3.

Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT complete sack

Extremely well refined and with an outstanding design, the Mares Cyrano HFT 1.1 pneumatic speargun puts aside for a moment the traditional orange by Mares for a more natural and somehow fascinating blue of the rubber covering the grip and the safety switch. The match with the black of all the other components and the steel of the trigger gives a final very uplevel aestethic result, additionally improved by the shape of the barrel given by the Hydro Forming Technology (HFT).

The Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT comes with a very neat, strong and useful bag containing, in addition to the speargun, a useful head cover, a pump, a tahitian shaft, a charging multi-handle, a line and a sticker. Inside the bag a very neat pocket to position the shaft and the pump is available.

Handle

Always a key part of any speargun, the handle has a slightly anatomical grip for both left and right handers. Key is the 100% stainless steel release mechanism (100% 316L stainless steel), including the neat and visible steel trigger and lateral line release lever. The angle between the grip and the muzzle of the speargun is 117° (measured), considering for the grip the rear profile of the handle where the palm of the hand adheres and which gives the inclination of the wrist compared to the forearm.

The hand is positioned on the grip in contact with a softer rubber part for better adherence. The base part is wide utilizing the advanced and most recent solution by Mares that should help brandishing of the speargun in different directions. The shape of the grip is complete with an anatomical concave area on both sides in the upper part to better position the hand.

On the upper left side of the handle of the Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT we find the power regulator, while on the right the security system for the trigger is present, well made, visible, and perfectly feelable when holding the speargun, advising the spearo of the system being in block or release position. In fact, if the spearo can feel the level it means the speagun is in block mode. Still, this works well for right handers, less for left handers.

The line release lever, also in stainless steel, is lateral to the release mechanism as for the most modern solutions, respect to the ones with inferior line release levers that have the disadvantage of possibly getting stuck to elements on the sea floor.

A specific screw under the trigger is used by Mares factory experts to perfectly regulate the system, and for such reason a red glue spot is positioned on the screw itself as Mares discourages any action on the system by non authorized people.

Handle base structure is made of Pa6, a plastic material with specific high level mechanical properties: excellent mechanical characteristics and excellent wear resistance, good resistance to mechanical stress even at low temperatures, fatigue resistant (it maintains its characteristics even under repeated stress and load), toughness (high resistance to compression and extension), resistance to aging and atmospheric agents, resistance to alkalis, inorganic compounds and solvents, good chemical resistance to organic compounds. As PA6 is hygroscopic, meaning it can absorb humidity, Mares uses it loaded with 15% glass fibre to reduce this effect.

The softer blue part of the grip is made of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). The benefit of using such material is the ability to stretch, to moderate elongations and return alomost ot its original shape, creating a longer life and better physical range than other materials.

Barrel

The external and the internal barrels are key for the entire functioning of the speargun. The main aspect of the design of the Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT, as for all Cyrano family, is the offset of the two, where the internal barrel is moved upward of 4 mm compared to the centre of the external one. So the distance between the line of aim and the shaft is reduced from 2 cm to 1.6 cm. This gives a good advantage in setting the line of aim, as it partially reduces the limit of pneumatic spearguns compared to sling guns: the offset of the shaft compared to the line of aim.

External barrel has a specific shape and internal volume, thanks to the advanced HFT (Hydro Forming Technology), which permit better bouyancy and, according to Mares, hydrodinamics.

Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT preformed barrel

It is made as usual in aluminium and its dimensions are 824 mm long and 48 mm external diameter, with increased in the horizontal diameter to 52 mm thanks to the special shape given by the HFT process. The thickness of the walls is 2 mm. This is also key for the resistance of the speargun, that Mares indicates to be set at 16 Bar of pressure, up to maximum 30 Bar and NOT more, but indeed the system and the security standards given by Mares request the tank to support pressure up to 100 Bar.

The internal barrel is evidently 11 mm diameter, determining eventually slighlty lower power for the same pressure load, but also easier loading process compared to the 13 mm solution, also available in the Mares line of Cyrano spearguns. In addition, oversized air passages in the internal barrel also contribute to greater power of the shot.

Length from tip of head to release mechanism is equal to 920 mm.

Muzzle

Mares Cyrano 1.1 HFT muzzle

Very compact and light (31 grams) one piece component made of anodized aluminum, the head is another key component of the Cyrano, where wider and more inclined passages help the outflow of the water moved by the piston during the shot, reducing friction and power loss, for better exit speed of the shaft.

Piston

For additional power of the shot, linked to maximum friction reduction, is the new EVO Piston, which determines increase in speed and easy loading, also due to better lubrication, the latter having the additional effect of better durability. Piston material is hardened Pom Delrin 100, insuring toughness, high impact strength, high resistance to repeated impact, high mechanical strength and rigidity, outstanding creep resistance and long-term fatigue endurance.
